Shortcuts to friends' shared items

Sharing articles was a built-in option in Google Reader for as long as I remember, and I've been using the app since the summer of 2006. It started to evolve and become more social about a year ago, but the feature didn't became very popular until the acquisition by Facebook brought a big cloud of incertitude over the future of FriendFeed. It also helped that Google Reader eased the access to the shared items by giving them an easily readable address, that can also be added to Google Profiles.

Brizzly – a better Twitter

Dozens or perhaps hundreds of Twitter clients populate the Internet these days and more of them launch every week. Although brizzly is still an invite-only beta product, it stands out in this crowd with the best combination of features and user interface I have seen so far. I discovered it through Google Reader, where Louis Gray mentioned it in one of his articles and offered 150 invites for this new webapp. I used one of the invites and it impressed me so much, it became my twitter client of choice ever since.

Taichi Yamada - Străini

in Vatra Dornei, Romania

Google Reader suggestions

The Google Reader team just launched a new tool for sharing and voting ideas from the users. It’s called “Product Ideas for Google Reader” and it takes feedback to a whole new level! I distinctly remember trying it on a while back, probably last year, when it most likely was just a new Google experiment.

Product Ideas for Google Reader voting My first impression hasn’t changed: it’s a very simple and efficient design, very “Google-like”. It has a clean blue-on-white look that presents you with previously shared ideas and lets you vote them by choosing between three buttons: “Yes”/“No”/“meh…”. After you clicked one, the next idea fades into view. This flow of suggestions is very addictive, but still extremely fast. You can still change your mind after voting by changing from “Yes” to “No” or vice versa. The tool tracks the votes publicly with two horizontals bars that show the number of likes/dislikes when hovering over them with the mouse.

Interface updates in Yahoo! mail and Twitter

I don’t use Yahoo! mail very often, despite the fact it offers unlimited storage. I have moved all my relevant conversations to Gmail ever since it launched. Now I use the Yahoo! mailbox as an online storage for all the large files I might need sometime in the future.

When I logged in today, I was greeted with a message announcing changes to the interface. The part about filtering messages from connections and contacts was already available for some time. What really caught my eye was the interface redesign.

How big is Facebook?

I guess you’re not really huge until a big rock star recommends you to the fans. That happened on Facebook yesterday when Mike Shinoda posted a video on the Linkin Park fan page, explaining how to use the newly-introduced name-tagging when posting about their favorite band:

Or is it actually the other way around? Is Facebook now so big, everybody who is or wants to be somebody must get connected here? After all, there are not many artists who can say they have sold their albums to more than 250 Million people, which is a conservative estimate of the current Facebook audience. Probably fewer than 10 in the entire modern music history, according to Wikipedia.

Update: err, better make that “more than 300 Million people”, as of yesterday! 50 Million new users in 75 days, a remarkably strong growth! I’m curious how long it will take for the next 50 Million to join…

On Google Chrome's command-line flags

Google Chrome, the new browser that took the computer world by surprise in September 2008, celebrated its one-year anniversary earlier this month. In this relatively short time it has already reached version 4 on the development channel, putting it on par with much older projects like Firefox and Safari. Despite it's revolutionary features and fresh interface, Google's project didn't manage to secure a significant market share; current reports put it at only 2-3% usage worldwide. The recent deal with Sony could change that, by introducing the browser to a broader consumer base.

More services for Google Reader “Send To” links

In a I’ve detailed how to add a custom link to Google Reader that sends the article to the shortening service bit.ly. In the mean time I have discovered how to add other services to this great tool built in to Reader. They are probably less popular than others already mentioned on the web, but still useful to a lot of Internet users.

Going mobile

Recently I was away from my desktop PC for a week, traveling through the country in my summer holiday. Luckily I discovered several WLAN hot-spots there so I could connect with my mobile phone. I discovered some new interesting things about the online applications I regularly use in their mobile form and I thought I share them with you.

Peter F. Hamilton - Steaua Pandorei

in Bucharest, Romania
